Description
The three Soldiers shown are reenacting the loading of the cannon on top of Fort Delaware, which they fire during the reenactment. Fort Delaware is located in Delaware City, Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River. Chief Engineer Joseph Gilbert Totten designed this harbor defense facility. The Union used Fort Delaware as a prison for Confederate prisoners of war, federal convicts, political prisoners, and privateer officers during the American Civil War. Major Charles W. Raymond designed a three-gun concrete battery, which was built inside the Fort in the 1890's. This was later named Battery Torbert. Fort Delaware was part of the three point concept by 1900 and worked closely with Fort DuPont in Delaware City, Delaware and Fort Mott in Pennsville, New Jersey. Pea Patch Island Prison Camp trail is a 3/4 mile walk through the area that was formerly home to the Officer's Row, Prison hospital, several outbuildings and a Spanish-American War era bunker. The only access to Pea Patch Island and Fort Delaware is by ferry and a jitny after walking to the end of the boardwalk.
