Artist's Description

Inside Fort Delaware there are architecturally visual brick masonry archways that tell a story of political prisoners of war and High-ranking Confederate officers passing through to the mess hall and other areas of the Fort grounds. They were housed in open bay barrack rooms inside the Fort and in former maid quarters. The political prisoners were often given priviledges to more food, roaming of the Island, and more freedoms than the regular prisoners. Two million plus bricks used for the scarp wall's interior were purchased from Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and used for construction of soldier barracks, officer quarters, underground cisterns, casemates, powder magazines, bread ovens and the Fort's high wall. To provide stability and distribute weight equally, Masonry arches and vaults were used throughout the entire Fort. To create a strong flooring system, poured concrete was used as a layer above the vaults.

About Pamela Hyde Wilson

Pamela Hyde Wilson

Hello from slower, lower Delaware. I have always loved photography. The beautiful oil paintings my Grandfather and Mother painted now hang on my walls and are my inspiration of the beauty that surrounds us. Now that I am retired, I am able to enjoy taking pictures of varied subjects and share them. I am the Author of "Pamsy and Me", a book about a Special Needs little girl and have recently submitted writings on triond.com. Selling dolls and gifts on the Internet for many years has kept me busy with doll companies, auctions and the like. Thank you for viewing and voting on my photographs. Please feel welcome to add me to your "Watch List". Philippians 4:13
