Description
It was customary for World War II submarines to be named for fish. The Torsk got its name from a gadoid fish, a relation to the cod fish, found in the North Atlantic. Torsk is Norwegian in origin. The USS Torsk SS-423 is one of two surviving Tench-class Fleet submarines and is open for tourists in the Inner Harbor outside of the National Baltimore Aquarium. The ship's original radio call sign was NKST, and its radio room, amateur radio station NK3ST, fires up several times a year for special occasions. As a side note, I could not resist taking a close-up of the "shark" face of the submarine next to the "Water Taxi" sign.
