Description
The Salem Ferry, located in Delaware City, is the only means of transport to Pea Patch Island. Passengers then walk on the dock to an awaiting jitney that takes them to Fort Delaware The Union fortress once housed Confederate prisoners of war and dates back to 1859. It was originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.
The Salem Delaware Ferry takes visitors from Delaware City on a 1/2 mile ride to Pea Patch Island. The ferry is the only means of transport to the Island. Passengers then take a walk from the the Island dock to an awaiting jitney that takes them to Fort Delaware.
